My Work
End of Semester Project
For the end of semester project we made a mask then wrote an essay about our personality and how we have been socialized. My essay is about how societal factors have molded and changed my personality.
My Mask
My mask, which is made of about 15 layers of epoxy resin, represents the complexity of me. In order to make the mask for this project, I took on the challenge of learning how to use epoxy resin, because continuous learning and trying new things is a foundational part of who I am. On the front of the mask, the multi-color swirled layers represent the ever changing and complex ways that I learn, think, connect and interact with people. These layers represent me as a student, employee, family member, dog-lover, friend and cyclist - all interconnected but different. Moving back in the mask, there is the white screen which represents the wall between the complex, interconnected layers of me and those things that I keep more personal and enjoy doing with friends and family. The back of the mask features some of the activities and unique interests that are important to me such as biking, climbing and woodworking. My dad asked me why I chose the epoxy layered design for this project instead of just painting the plaster mask, my response was simple, “it’s complicated, just like me.”
